Buhari Picks Ume-Ezeoke as Running Mate

Former Head of State and presidential candidate under the platform of All Nigeria Peoples’ Party (ANPP), Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) has picked ANPP chairman, Chief Edwin Ume-Ezeoke as his running mate for next year’s presidential elections. Buhari’s choice was submitted to the Independent National Electoral Com-mission (INEC) few hours ahead of INEC’s deadline for submission of names of running mate by political parties. As at 12:30am today, only ANPP, Action Congress (AC) and Democratic People’s Party (DPP) were seen at INEC’s office trying to beat the deadline.
Ezeoke was named after an offer for the slot was allegedly turned down by Senate President, Ken Nnamani. While Buhari, who was the ANPP flag-bearer in 2003 polls, hails from Katsina State, Ezeoke, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, hails from Anambra State.
Buhari was picked last week by the ANPP after a consensus nod by the party, a move geared to give Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential flag-bearer, Governor Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, and the PDP machinery a serious fight for elections next year. Buhari was Nigeria’s head of state between 1982 and 1985, and since the emergence of democracy, especially in 2003, he has remained a political force to reckon with.

AFENIFERE’S PARTY, DPA, ENDORSES BUHARI

AFENIFERE’S PARTY, DPA, ENDORSES BUHARI

*Harry Akande tipped as his running mate?

In what seems like a political masterstroke, the party of the Afenifere, DPA has endorsed the presidential candidacy of General Mohammadu Buhari

Speaking with Empowered Newswire, DPA chieftain and 1999’s AD presidential aspirant Chief Olu Falae said it was a momentous occasion in Abuja on Thursday December 21 when Buhari showed up and addressed the DPA delegates. “It was electrifying,” he said adding that Buhari and himself “decided to put our forces together against the PDP.”

Falae said the endorsement of Buhari’ presidential candidacy by the Afenifere and the DPA is a result of the former head of state’s commitment to the ideals and practice of federalism and restructuring. “He agreed to those things that are of vital importance to the Yorubas and so we decided to endorse him as our candidate on the merit,” Falae stated.

In a similar development, Falae said all the nine gubernatorial aspirants of the AC in Lagos, who were dissatisfied with the outcome of the primaries in the state, have all joined the DPA.

The ANPP-DPA collaboration is seen as a replica of what happened in 1999 when the AD and the ANPP, known then as APP, formed an alliance and presented a single candidate against PDP’s presidential candidate. One of the brains behind that alliance then, Chief Harry Akande is also said to be involved in the DPA-ANPP alliance.

Speaking with Empowered Newswire, Chief Harry Akande said what happened is that the Afeniferes who dominated the AD in 1999 are the same forces now in DPA and therefore according to him, “it is payback time for ANPP that conceded the presidential slot for the AD in 1999.

Some political observers say, the ANPP-DPA alliance might spring up Chief Harry Akande as Buhari’s vice presidential candidate. Sources said three possibilities are being considered as Buhari’s running mate. Chiefs Ogbonaya Onu, Pere Ajunwa and Harry Akande.
